Margaret Laurence Tour (SWIS)

Published June 01, 2023

Our Swis ladies Gladys and Alicia went on a tour to the Margaret Laurence home with a group of our Swis kids (Ages 12 +) and some of their family members.  It was a good opportunity to learn more about Margaret Laurence - a Canadian literary icon who is also known as 'The First Lady of Manawaka'. The home (turned museum) was built in 1894 and is the former home of the famous author.  The home boasts many interesting articles that belonged to her such as a special display case of first edition novels, her typewriter, doctoral robes, awards and certificates to mention a few.  Most of the woodwork in the home, such as the intricate scroll work was handcrafted by Margaret Laurence's grandfather John Simpson.  It was interesting to have a tour so that we were able to increase our knowledge while at the same time also appreciating many of the artifacts and memories of Margaret Laurence's life and the home that she lived in.
